Jerry’s House Brings Laughter to
Children of Bellevue (CoB) at Bellevue Hospital
‘Because Children Need More Than Medicine to Thrive’
Melbourne, Australia – May 17, 2017 – Jerry’s House www.JerrysHouse.org, a global initiative that brings humor therapy to sick and disadvantaged children, will partner with and Children of Bellevue (CoB) http://childrenofbellevue.org/ at Bellevue Hospital to bring its initiative to the hospital and ambulatory care center.
With the Healing Through Laughter initiative Jerry’s House will provide Children of Bellevue Child Life Specialists with the tools they need to bring humor therapy to young patients and their families who are coping with the stress, pain, and fear associated with illness, medical treatment, and hospitalization.
This program is in keeping with Bellevue’s original “toy ladies” who – dating back to the 1950s – volunteered at the hospital, wheeling toy-filled carts through the ward and overseeing play time with the children. The Jerry’s House toy chests will be filled with fun play items that are sure to bring smiles to the faces of pediatric patients, including: doctor/patient/Jerry Lewis hand-puppets, Red Button noses that–when pressed –make funny noises, cartoon head Jerry Lewis balloons, cartoon-comic calendars, hand-wash nose dispensers, rubber glasses & wigs, stethoscope pens, Daggy-Dad Joke Generator, and stress balls that make funny faces. Inpatients will be given branded briefcases filled with the patients’ favorite items and their comic-book pillowcase to take home.
“I’m extremely excited about the partnership with Children of Bellevue and Jerry’s House to bring laughter, humor and joy to the pediatric patients of NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue Hospital programs. By now you know how passionate I am about finding ways to help sick children have a better life, a passion only equaled by my love for comedy. This opportunity is a wonderful way to positively influence vulnerable children and young people, making a real difference in their lives when they need it the most,” said Jerry Lewis, Co-Founder of Jerry’s House.
The ‘Healing Through Laughter’ toy chest was created by young Australian television personality Lochie Graham, Co-Founder of Jerry’s House, to make children laugh, creating a supportive and fun environment while pediatric patients are in hospital as well as to take home. Jerry’s House gained the support of the iconic American comedian Jerry Lewis. Over the past 60 years Jerry Lewis has raised more than
$3 billion for children with chronic illness. Jerry’s House embodies Jerry Lewis’ unique capacity for compassion, generosity, fun and laughter that has transformed the lives of so many children and young people. Jerry’s House carries on Jerry Lewis’ legacy of harnessing humor, laughter, and joy to positively affect children and adolescents, which ultimately contributes to physical and emotional healing.
“We appreciate the Jerry’s House partnership and their enthusiasm in working with Children of Bellevue to enrich our pediatric patients’ experience while they are getting their life-saving treatment here at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue,
“It seems to me that every child’s world is better when they can laugh–despite the terrible things in their lives. It’s my hope and dream that all children around the world will have a safe place where they can learn to heal through laughter,”
Committed to the legacy of Jerry Lewis’ fundraising for children in need Jerry’s House is a global initiative and facilities demonstrate the proven positive effects of humor on the body/mind/spirit. A unique initiative, grounded in comedy, humor and play it is designed to bring joy, fun and laughter to children and young people challenged by a chronic health condition, disability, mental health issue or abusive past. The program teaches children and young people the powers of comedy and humor to change their perspective and enable the process of healing, essential to physical and emotional healing: www.JerrysHouse.org, or https://www.facebook.com/jerryshouselol/
